I realize there are too many colors in this submission. I wanted to know if it would be accepted based on \"mature content\" before I did the work to remove the gradients. :) Thanks.

I honestly don't know what to say. It's a great illustration. I think I'd wear it without the colored boxes in the bg, tho I bet I'll attract attention with it.

But I know a lot of people here who wouldn't.

isaacdealey on Feb 02 '08
p.s. I know I'm going to have to redo the colors on this one -- may actually redo the inks also to make them a little simpler, but if it's accepted, I may have to remove several of the items from my cafe press store

Beautiful design, but...

I think I'd have to punch anyone I saw wearing it.

something against robots? :)

Elkrim
Elkrim on Feb 02 '08
Well, really, would you be quite so fond of a male robot provocatively performing 'maintenance' on his own ass?
Chris Carney
Chris Carney on Feb 02 '08
I don't think the humour is wrong as such. I just think it's a bit on the simple side more for teens I don't think real people would find it that funny
isaacdealey
isaacdealey on Feb 02 '08
Elkrim: Wouldn't bother me. Heck, I might even illustrate it. Although I think it'd be funnier to see a male robot dealing with impotence. Maybe as part of a knock-off viagra ad. ;)

Chris: dunno about the "childish" thing... I'm 33, my girlfriend is just a few years younger and likes it -- I've had positive comments on it from folks on tribe ranging from early 20's to mid 50's.
Chris Carney
Chris Carney on Feb 02 '08
...what I mean is adults are so familiar with sex it can be a hard subject to get laughs out of just using a drawing most people nowadays are so much more advaced compared to yesdayear
isaacdealey
isaacdealey on Feb 02 '08
chris: I suppose that's possible...
isaacdealey
isaacdealey on Feb 02 '08
actually the response thus far is kind of interesting ... because I'm not sure this would have been my first choice to submit actually -- I submitted this one in particular at the suggestion of a female friend of mine in her mid-30's, who anticipated that it would be well received here. It's just so hard to know how something is going to be received. :)
Elkrim
Elkrim on Feb 02 '08
If it were more cartoony, I think it would be more clearly a joke. But as it is, it looks more like something from a kink website than a mockery.
isaacdealey
isaacdealey on Feb 02 '08
Elkrim: I had Sorayama in mind when I made it -- and it's much closer to the style of illustration I did when I was younger than the comic strips I've been doing more recently -- I may redo the inks to make it more "cartoonish", which would be a plus for me probably actually, since that way I wouldn't have to remove anything from my cafe press store... I may also do the Viagra ad knockoff separately - thanks for the feedback :)

Maybe this might make it funnier tho: the Colbert Report :) Saw this a while after I'd created it. Also reminded me of a news piece about a collection of guys in Japan who're driven business guys but can't seem to handle the dating thing and end up spending all their money on big collections of life-size girl dolls.

this might get rejected just cuz there are kids that use this site. also a lot of people probably wouldn't wear it considering the content.
jillustration
   jillustration on Feb 02 '08
though you can obviously draw, i'd keep coming up with ideas :)
isaacdealey
isaacdealey on Feb 02 '08
Thanks Jill. Yeah, my first concern was that Threadless might just reject it irrespective of its popularity, but I figured since my friend had suggested it specifically that I'd put it out and see what the response was, rather than making an early assumption about it.

The character is well drawn, nice coloring. The theme may be stronger than usual, but you don't have much to lose but try to submit it. If it is wearable on Threadless, you'll end up knowing.

eladear
eladear on Feb 02 '08
I'm going to be honest, I wouldn't buy this print. But maybe someone else would. On another note...design related, have you considered coloring the back rectangles in a solid color without the outline? It may enhance the character more, because she has outline, and the back rectangles simplified with just color and no outline...

And possibly explore different color t-shirts... more than one option. Good luck.

i hope they print this in kids sizes
Mrkinney77
Mrkinney77 on Feb 02 '08
you need to take out the colored boxs and but a ground plain it looks awkward and not because its a robot chick masturbating
Mrkinney77
Mrkinney77 on Feb 02 '08
you also need to make the feet bigger and make it look like her feet are actually doing something to support herself, cause it looks like shes just floating there. either a ground plain or a shadow
Keter
Keter on Feb 02 '08
...and I hope Prexis is joking. Gods, the difference an absent ;o) can make in meaning....

Sweet illo. I think you can take the "don't submit" count as an indicator of how things may go in the voting, assuming Threadless accepts this. I like the boxes behind the robot, but I think I would consider removing the black borders around them. And the feet are too small and misshapen.
isaacdealey
isaacdealey on Feb 02 '08
the feet are shaped like women's 6" heels -- and they're small because it's a joke / stereotype about women's shoes. heh. I get that comment a lot tho -- but that was done deliberately.

I'm just offended that it's an Acme tool. ;-D I would loose the boxes, or as you said, change the colors. Great illustration.

mcmissa on Feb 15 '08
Not my cup of tea..but to each their own. The only comment I'll make is that I'm not crazy about the background boxes with the robot. Feel like there needs to be something more fitting for the style of the robot.

nice art.... sick design...
isaacdealey
isaacdealey on Feb 15 '08
heh -- thanks guys, I really hadn't expected to see any more comments on this one after they tapered off a couple weeks ago. :P I'm thinking I probably won't submit a version of this -- I *may* but it's a long shot -- I'd have to do a lot of work on it to make it palatable and I'm not currently convinced it would ever overcome the inertia of its being controversial. I may however come back to that idea of the male robot with erectile dysfunction. :)
KetchupAndMustard
KetchupAndMustard on Feb 15 '08
wow this is the most controversial shirt i have seen on threadless... and i see a lot of people dont like it. i think it's really fucking awsome... if you redid it then fine that's your decision but i think it looks really good the way it is...so if you win good luck with that.... i really hope you can get this one submitted. nothing like a good controversy to stir the shit up right?
Lock42
Lock42 on Feb 15 '08
It looks awesome, and if you submit it you would probably be in the running for the Most Controversial Design Bestees Award
isaacdealey
isaacdealey on Feb 16 '08
thanks lock & ketch. :) I wasn't aware of the bestee awards, had to go look them up. Looks like the controversial design award is given to a design that got printed, so I guess it'd have to do well in the voting first and then get accepted for print before I'd be in the running. But it's something to keep in mind. Thanks for the heads up! :)
rAmpantDesigns
rAmpantDesigns on Feb 16 '08
Hell, sub it. Art is beautiful and what have you got to lose anyway? Worst that will happen is it will not get printed, right?

Score it before it's too late!
isaacdealey
isaacdealey on Feb 17 '08
Well if they accepted this one, then I guess mine can't be too controversial! :)

Hilarious, but I'd feel like a target for angry women wearing it in public.

Check mine out, yo?
