I'm not sure if the tigers should be giving the lion dirty looks like they are, or if they should be shocked.. so any advice on expressions for the tigers would be great
efe1347 on Jun 11 '09
Yea its good
i think you should go with the dirty looks but the expression on the lions face is perfect maybe it would ook good with just orange so its a two color thing mine is http://www.threadless.com/critique/46239/Lava_Friends thanks |

hehe this is funny. i think he could have a paint bucket in his mouth with the brush sticking out. not sure about the tongue sticking out on the one though.. its cute.

hi there:]
lovely drawings, dont you wanna try it with colors? It would maybe look better? please can you check mine also?thanks a lot http://www.threadless.com/critique/46222/My_favorite_toy |
Ars Fera on Jun 11 '09
I'll add colors if everyone decides they like this version better, and then I'll scrap the V1.
V2 is an alternate path I may take with the design of this tee. V1 is the original concept and idea. So please compare the two and see which one you would like to see on a tee :) |
Tranquilo on Jun 11 '09
Try to use the tiger with the brush (looks better and is easier to understand what is happening) and the tree of the first one on V2.
Ars Fera on Jun 11 '09
Ah alright, I was wondering if the tree would be a good idea but I was waiting for someone else to tell me that, alright, I'll add in a tree to the background
Ars Fera on Jun 11 '09
Alright, I'm working on V2 in color right now! Should there be an outline? or should it be outline-less like in V1? I could sort of go either way on an outline..
TFail on Jun 11 '09
Honestly this looks adorable! Def like it more than the original attempt. Higher cute factor ;) But anyway, keep going and we'll see how it starts to turn out =D
Cheers |

Ars Fera on Jun 11 '09
Thanks! So I've heard a few no goes with the tiger sticking out the tongue, should I substitute a tiger with a different expression?
spork23 on Jun 11 '09
Thanks for you input on my design.
I think you should get rid of the tiger sticking out the tongue. Some color would be nice too like in v1. |

interesting. i prefer this over v1.
also that whispering tigers paw seems too large? |

Really like this idea. Can't wait to see some color! Please crit mine when you get a chance! |

Bellarose9690 on Jun 12 '09
This is an awesome idea, I definitely like the lion's face, it looks very cute and innocent. Excited to see some color. V2 is definitely better than V1.
GageAM on Jun 12 '09
Yeah, I like V2 better. The tiger with the tongue may be a bit much and really isn't needed. The other two get the point across. The only problem with this version versus V1 is that it is a little harder to tell what the lion is doing in V2. I got it after a little bit and once you color it the confusion may go away.
I like the illustration though and I think that when you color it you should keep the color simpler than V1. Like suggested above, maybe just an orange shirt and print black and white? White for the underbellies and the clouds, black for everything else. Could be cool. Nice work. Any thoughts on mine? |
swimgirl45 on Jun 12 '09
this is sooo much better! love the drawing, and its not too cartoony, which i love... i would like to see the tree back, and i cant wait to see the colors!
got some new colors up! catfriend |

zumitrenko on Jun 16 '09
I like this version. The concept is really funny, and the expression of the lion just great.
I don't like very much the tiger showing his tongue, it looks a bit weird, but he other too I like them. I think this would be a really nice tee, specially for children! |

Ok, I got rid of the tongue and changed his expression to look shocked. I had to use a halftone for the tree because nothing else looked very good to simulate foliage..
And like before, leave a comment and a link to your critique and I'll check it out :) |
the loose seal on Jun 16 '09
ok. are you pushing too many colors right now? because if not, i think the treebranches need to be a subtile shade of brown. looks odd with them green. thats what i first noticed. very nice concept, very cute. here is my question though. how does the design end on the t shirt? designs in boxes dont do very well. how are you going to put it on a t shirt?
Ars Fera on Jun 16 '09
Yes.. I've used all of my 8 colors :( but I could probably just switch the green out and use the brown that's on the lion cub's nose and tail. And I hate box designs.. so I wouldn't let that happen lol, after I get a few more critiques I'll post a version with placement
swimgirl45 on Jun 16 '09
oo colorrrr. yea the tree just doesnt match the quality of the rest of the design. it makes the tigers look more flat than they are... maybe add a more leafy feel to it? looking good though, glad to see color!
Ive been working w/ even more colors and ideas. could you look at mine?t |
Ars Fera on Jun 16 '09
I would make it more leafy if I could.. I'm not sure how, the tool I used for the tree in V1 was in Fireworks and since I figured out you can't do halftones in Fireworks, I've switched to Photoshop and they don't have a similar tool..
jvipper on Jun 16 '09
overall very cute, would not change anything
colorm3rainbow on Jun 16 '09
The trees look really out of place, the rest of the design looks so nice and then the trees just look like they were thrown it last minute. Maybe try to match them with the outline of the grass.
jhudis on Jun 16 '09
I'd change those trees. The texture of the leaves doesn't really work. Also, those clouds might be a little too flat on the bottom, might want to mess around with rounding them out a bit. The tigers look great though! Any tips for my design?

I liked the first one. The illo was better, I mean. I'd try to use your design with that style. And the halftone tree is out-of-place. I'd either halftone everything, or change it. It looks like you have the maximum no. of colors, so maybe the-- Oh, forget it, just use the first design!

And I'd like to say that I love the flat-bottom clouds!

Excuse the brown in the far right tiger's eye, forgot to erase that part of the tree behind him

Looks great. The only things I can see are, the tiger to the far right, its right eye is showing the bark for the tree behind it and the tiger closest to the lion looks flattened.

Very cute design, although I'm really not feelin the leaves on the tree. I think you should see what it looks like with just the "copy cat" and the tiger on the left. I think it might look better for a t-shirt design.
If you have time I'd appreciate your opinion. http://www.threadless.com/critique/46560/Onslaught |

Well, most people have told me to get a tree and I got it but I can't find a good way to make the leaves work..

I think the overall design is great, but the blue is really distracting. I'd scratch that sky color and use a light blue tee instead.

Ok, so now I've tried to fix the tree again, and changed the background color. But in changing the background color I had to find an alternative for tigers' eyes, so I did yellow and a little bit of orange halftone around the pupil (probably not visible). So should I keep the new background color and settle for the yellow eyes, or should I get the brighter color background and get back their blue eyes?
Ars Fera on Jun 16 '09
I do like this color for the sky though.. that's why it's killing me lol..
And like before, leave me a comment and a link to your crit and I'll check it out! |

joyceb on Jun 16 '09
Yeah I'd say yellow eyes for sure (current)... how would you put that on a shirt? I'm just kinda curious. I've never liked when shirts have a big square on the center wit little to no fade to the shirt if that makes sense... but i love the faces. the farthest right tiger's head seems a little big for its body but maybe that's just me.

kapoor on Jun 17 '09
I love the expressions on the tigers .... Im not in favour of the whole color scheme ...maybe you could try a monochrome... also maybe a more compact as opposed to a spread out design...
the loose seal on Jun 17 '09
i dont think the clouds going onto the sleeves is a good idea. think about how it would look if someone didnt walk around with their arms awkwardly at 90 degree angles from their body. other than that, the tree leaves still need work. and im not saying its going to work, but as kapoor suggested, i think it would be interesting to see it in monochrome if possible. could give it a more mature touch.
rabodnube on Jun 18 '09
I´m agree with thelooseseal.
Colours in monochrome is a great idea. The clouds doesn´t look well in this way..take off! The halftone dots on the tree doesn´t work well. Just a few work more and you can get it..It´s a brilliant idea!! Could you mind check my tee - critique? http://www.threadless.com/critique/46700/Love_in_sale |

different ideas from others...but I really like it.... |

Would making the tree a little like the clouds work? And what color for monochrome? I don't see any one color really working well..

Hi ArsFera!
I´d like to see the next version. Thanks for the help. I made some changes that you suggested me. You think the shirt is ready to be submit or needs work? http://www.threadless.com/critique/46700/Love_in_sale#v4 |
Tigerbill on Jun 19 '09
Hey-- cool design. If it were me wearing it (male-late 20s), I'd probably want a more muted colour scheme-- maybe monochromatic like someone suggested or a complimentary colour scheme...
I've got tigers on the brain at the moment too. It'd be great to get feedback on my latest version. |
Ike Lawliet on Jun 19 '09
The expressions are great on the tigers, but could you alter the lion's pose a little? It reminds me a lot of the Lion King. Not that that's bad, but that's a bit less original.
If you don't mind, can you look at mine too? |
nasmo on Jun 19 '09
Nice concept, but I agree about the color palette—if not monochromatic, then at least a more limited color scheme. Instead of that vibrant green grass, maybe try a more subdued yellow or yellow-brown that would be analogous to the yellow and orange of the cats. Right now, the grass is so vibrant, it's competing for attention with what should be the true focus of your design.
I'm also not a huge fan of the grass extending to the sides and the bottom of the shirt. It's going to look pretty awkward just cut off abruptly on the sides. And you don't really need all that empty grass space under the cats. I'd consider some kind of small, loose organic outline, just a little patch of grass really, to establish that the cats aren't floating in space. I think that's all you need. The tree, clouds, and birds are also taking attention away from the focal point. The halftones on the tree are very distracting, and if you want to keep the tree, maybe consider making it one solid color silhouette in the background. Similarly, if you want to keep the clouds, I'd make them smaller, move them closer to the horizon, and try to integrate them more into your color palette, perhaps making them a light yellow or brown. And finally, I don't think this works well on light blue. Again, in the interest of tying together a more limited color scheme, I might try it on a brown or some more neutral colors like sand or cream. Whew. That was a lot. Didn't mean to be so overwhelming, but I think this design has a whole lot of potential. It just needs a little work to get there. |
Ars Fera on Jun 19 '09
The more the merrier Nasmo!
So.. I should go with a yellow color scheme? I'm not sure how many shades of yellow I would need to accomplish the right tones of things.. |
Tisato on Jun 19 '09
Nice design!!... I'd change the tree... I'ts kinda different from the design style...
nasmo on Jun 19 '09
I don't think you need to limit yourself JUST to yellow. Personally, I'd stick with the colors you've already used for the lion and the tigers, and then build the rest of the color palette around that. So maybe some browns, yellows, yellow-browns, beiges, yellow-oranges, stuff like that. Whatever you end up using, I would definitely keep all the background elements (grass, tree, clouds) more subdued than the bright yellow, white, and orange you're using on the cats. That way, everything will be integrated color-wise, but the eye will be drawn to the focal point of the design.
This is a good example of using a limited color palette. I'm not saying to copy it exactly, but I would take a look at how well the colors from a fairly narrow range work with each other in it. There are a lot of websites that can help you match colors and create an effective palette; Color Scheme Designer and Kuler come to mind, but there are plenty out there. |

Symphonic on Jun 19 '09
Definitely the best one yet! You might play around with the lion/tiger outlines, possibly making them bolder and changing the colors (I think that using a dark/dull brown might look better than black).
swimgirl45 on Jun 19 '09
this is looking so good. i think the white on the lion needs to be tweaked...looks a little odd on places, like the tail.... lovin this though!
i have a new version up. could you look at mine? |
ilya yas on Jun 19 '09
hmm.. maybe its just my darker sense of humor,
but i think i'd rather the tigers looking at him as their next dinner rather than gossiping about him.. actually u achieve that quite easily by changing only the left tiger.. change his eye to something more evil.. :) but thats just an idea.. :) good job on the illo! |
Ars Fera on Jun 19 '09
I sort of thought that myself, Symphonic. I have used all 8 of my colors though.. should I ditch the black all together and go for a very dark brown?

Symphonic on Jun 19 '09
I would definitely try it. I think it really might tie the whole color scheme together.
nasmo on Jun 19 '09
Nice! I think this looks a lot better, especially the grass. The one thing I might recommend is that you move the tree a little to the left or a little to the right. Right now, what with all the branches, there's a whole lot going on in the background right where the one tiger is whispering in the other's ear. It's a little distracting. So I think you could fix that by either moving the tree a bit, or just making it lighter, so it recedes into the background more. Very nice illustration, though. I think it's really starting to come together.
Ars Fera on Jun 19 '09
Ah thank you Nasmo! I sort of thought about that myself but decided if no one else would say anything about the tree I wasn't going to bother lol.
What do you think about changing the black to a very dark brown? Should I change the white to a lighter yellow as well? Or would that dull out the entire composition? I thin if everything is a shade of beige, brown, or yellow, the white would stick out |
Symphonic on Jun 19 '09
I would keep the white. I don't think it betrays the color scheme like the black (somewhat) does. No harm in trying, though!
Ars Fera on Jun 19 '09
Ok :) I'll do the black first and see how everyone reacts and i'll pop the question again
Ars Fera on Jun 19 '09
Should detail be added to the tree foliage? Like some highlights and shadows? Or would that be too distracting?
nasmo on Jun 19 '09
It's just a background element, so I would say simpler is better. It really just needs to convey the fact that it's a tree. I would leave the details to the important parts of the design.

Would it be possible to see this on a shirt? Like on V6?
And I don't think the Tiger on the left is looking at the Lion properly. Maybe move the pupil more to the middle of its eye? (If it's supposed to be looking at the Lion) |
Admiral Pants on Jun 19 '09
I'm not crazy about the color of the cat who's painting himself. It's too bright for the other tones. I recommend a more golden/orange... maybe brownish. Overall, it looks great, though!

Ars Fera on Jun 19 '09
I think that changing the whole idea of the design this late in the process is far too troublesome : I would have to change the tigers' faces from being gossipy and irritated to menacing and mean and the lion would change completely. He would probably be scared instead of prancing about like he is now. I just think that those changes are a little too drastic when the design is almost ready for submission
Risdiansah on Jun 19 '09
yeah i agree with admiral pants.... change the color on the lion more orange or brownie so he looks alike with all the tigers :) .... other than that i think it's ready.

not a biggy, but tigers are solitary creatures... |
Ars Fera on Jun 20 '09
Eczact, that is exactly what I thought when someone suggested an idea with multiple tigers together a LONG time ago! But I doubt too many people will find it so ridiculous they will score me down for it when it is submitted. Plus they are cubs, maybe mom's away and they're chilling when this lion cub comes along. Although tigers don't live in Africa.. do they..

i see what u're saying.. good luck then.. its a great illo nevertheless..
looks better and better. i dont think you need the maroon colors though, just make the nose and paintbrush black. less colors are more ink friendly (which is more $$$ friendly) and more likely to be picked to print
please take a look at mine!link text |

I had sort of thought about that.. should the birds stay or go? No one has said anything about them up until now

i like them to be honest. i like to move towards less bold colors and more focus on the design. if i were to change anything else, i would suggest changing the lions color just a little bit. right now everything else on the shirt seems to be in the same color range except for the yellow of the lion, maybe ad just a tiny bit of orange to or brown to the lion?

The lion cub's yellow has been toned down a bit, but I couldn't darken it too much because then it just looks like he got an awkward tan. I expanded the whole picture and got rid of the brown grass outline to see what people thought of the horizon without it.
Don't be afraid to get picky! I'm just doing the fine polishing at this point |

V9 is the same as V8.. I accidentally reposted it instead of the real V9, which is now V10
DinoeNugget on Jun 21 '09
I actually liked the dark brown grass in the background. I still think the tiger on the left isn't looking at the cub though.
Can you please take a look at mine? Match Box! And Heart Plant! Thank you! |
Francesa on Jun 21 '09
I like it much better without the grass. The characters stand out.
BTW, nice expressions! |
Ars Fera on Jun 21 '09
Ok, well i'll wait for a few more comments on the grass. And someone has mentioned about the left tiger's eye and I'll fix that in V11, but I'm going to Newyork for a week tomorrow so I'll be back in a week! If you leave me a link to your critique, I'll check it out when I get back

Ok, I will look into the grass since a few people said they liked it. I'm going to try that lighter brown of the tree foliage though, because I'm not sure how good it looks with the the darker brown contrasting so much against the beige of the foreground

I think it looks great. I really like the illo style. This may be silly, but tail of the tiger closest to the copy cat is a little distracting.

Aaarrrggg Design on Jul 01 '09
Oh wow such characters! Loooove their expressions, perfect!
I agree with getza on the tail... funny I thought it was just me and wasn't going to bother you with it but it distract me too. I'm thinking I like the outlines on the grass, but I'd need to see how it looks on a tee before I can say for sure (Blank Tee template) |

ilya yas on Jul 01 '09
the brown grass is much better...
i think the left tigers tail should lie on the ground infront of him so there won't be a mix of tail.. :) |
Comfortador on Jul 01 '09
Very nice. The colors work well and the overall concept is clever. I think the only issue is the tail that (at first glance) seemingly coming out of the cat's leg.
If you get a chance please check out my critique here as well! |

Grass w/brown and no tail and I think it's ready to go.

this is so cute!! Could you maybe do something with the trees so the foliage doesn't look so flat? Maybe like you did with the clouds? I sure hope you get printed after all this hard work!!!

maybe have the tree bigger so it reaches up above the clouds or something?
this might look good on the shirt too if you have the design in the bottom right hand corner |

ps i like it :)

i love it, this is fantastic, i'm a little bit (losing words), but where would it go on the shirt?
the design's great, curious about placement (curious is the word!) check mine out? |
azarello on Jul 02 '09
this definitely has come a long way frm the start. nice improvements there :) !
but can i suggest perhaps, the 3 tigers..make it a lil bitsy smaller n to the front a bit, at the moment the tiger (looking shocked) doesnt seem to be standing on the right angle/perspective to the 'copycat'. dont u agree? i'd appreciate ur crit. ;) |
azarello on Jul 02 '09
sorry to 'spam' ur crit...
on 2nd thought, u can save the hassle (if u wish to go with it) n just move the shocked tiger's eyeball slightly to the right...know wht i mean? tht should do the trick ;) |
Ars Fera on Jul 02 '09
ah don't worry about leaving links lol, I encourage it, just forgot to mention I would comment on anyone's critique who leaves a comment and a link.
I actually did move the eyeball over a little after V10 since someone had mentioned that before, but I guess it still needs a little work, so I'll move it again |

haha ilike this alot. Especially the expression on the farthest left tiger. Made me giggle. OMG it came a long way from the V1. I agree with the trees. Add some details and i think its ready for submission. this is really cute.

I've moved the eye on the shocked tiger over a little bit so that it looks more like he is looking at the lion cub. I've also done a little bit with the trees to give them a little depth like the clouds. I don't want to add highlights or shadows because neither the tigers or the lion cub have any highlighting or shading.. so I didn't want the detail to compete with the main image..
And if you leave a comment and a link to your own critique or design I'll check it out! |
