Interview by Rachel Gottesman
Congratulations on your second print! Thanks! First it was bears, now cats. I have to say, I much prefer little kitties to bears...
I would definitely agree with you there, although my cats are rather fat.
I mean, can you imagine cleaning up after a bear? Do they even use a litter box?
Ew, no, but I say ew to cleaning up after kitties too. Its the lesser of the two evils though.
I believe the famous rhetorical question is "Does a bear $h*t in the woods?" but I wouldn't know if there was a litter box there or not, I'm going to assume no.
I take it that you and your husband are both artists, and you sometimes work together. What's it like working with your significant other? How does that whole process work for you?
Its great working with him for the most part, hah. The best results always happen though when we don't realize we are going to work on something together. Say Im watching tv and doodling in a sketchbook and then a few days later I will come back to it and he would have drawn more to it, or inked it. So then I might take it to the next level and paint it or add more elements to it. Sometimes we don't even talk about it, its just something we do, weird maybe. I don't know.
You're also an avid gardener. I used to have a little garden myself growing up, but it was just a few tomatoes and some pansies. Nothing as epic as yours seems to be. It must be nice growing so much of your own food!
My garden is hardly epic, I could divide it up into sections and say I have five small gardens. Three are flowers and some herbs, thyme, sage, that sort of thing. One is a water garden, then there is the veggie garden. It is small, tomatoes, cucumbers, peas, cantaloupe, watermelon, pumpkin, and 1 stalk of corn. its all contained in a 10' x 30' area.. Have I bored you yet?
No, but let's move on from vegetables. Where do you draw most of your inspiration from? I bet it's Threadless! When did you discover the community and what do you think it's done for you in terms of personal growth?
Mostly my inspiration just comes from everyday things around me. Gardens, Flowers, Hummingbirds, CATS! 80s nostalgia, and then just stuff that comes into my head out of nowhere I guess.
Threadless has been inspirational to me in a way that I wasn't expecting. The community here really makes you strive to do better work, which they also help you achieve with all of their positive AND negative comments in the critiques and the blogs. I haven't had this kind of feedback since school and its great.
Have you ever seen a stranger wearing your first printed design?
Not unless you count the submitted pictures on the site.
When it does happen in person, do you think you'd play it cool or would you totally get your photo taken with them?
I think I would play it cool at first, and maybe be like "hey man, nice shirt" and then see if I could drag the conversation out a bit to the point where it would be them asking to take the picture. Ha ha, yea that'd happen.
Who would win in a fight? Pac Man... or Mrs. Pac Man? Yeah talk about a brain teaser. Think about that one for a minute.
Pac Man or Mrs. Pac Man? Come on Rachel, you know Mrs. Pac Man would win. That question would only tease the brain of a man.
Is there anything you'd like to say to all of your fans out there?
I have fans?
Thanks for chatting!
