Moss

About my design

by Moss
The world can be a dangerous place. Yet somehow, between the disaster and the hatred and the pain, we survive. Despite the endless tragedies: the articulately designed, the carelessly blundered and even the blameless turbulence of the earth beneath our feet, we are still here.

Just be fucking proud that you are a member of the most resilient species this hostile little planet will ever see.

I am sorry if I have neglected things that you feel have a right to be on here. As I’m sure you can understand, it would be impossible to fit every deserving event on the chart, no matter how much I’d like to.

Typos are still a possibility. I have thoroughly checked it over, but I am not the best speeler in the world.

I hope you appreciate my Painbow.

Addressing the concern that the text is too small for a t-shirt: let's assume that the boys and girls at Threadless can make this work and print the shirt so that all text may be legible.

Based on this assumption, is this a design that you all would like to see printed?

I love both the elegance and profoundness of the design. Well done, Moss.

I appreciate the sentiment and sophistication of this design. However, rainbows are almost always associated with Gay Pride. When viewed from a distance, the design may be dismissed as such and the real meaning/intent would be lost.

i blame history on Sep 13 '05
this is wonderful. the text *is* small, but small text can be printed, and i like it.

i really, really hope this design is printed. i would buy it with absolutely no hesitation.

as a note about the gay pride association... that wouldnt bother me at all (im not gay, but i simply wouldnt care)... but, as this rainbow doesnt follow the "roy g biv" scheme, i dont think it would be associated with gay pride at all. at least thats not what i saw at first glance. cant have a pride rainbow without the purple, in my opinion!

i may just cry if i cant buy this shirt. $5

do you know fokt? on Sep 13 '05
actually, it does follow roygbiv. the colors are in the same order, just some are omitted due to printing constraints. where the hell is the famine caused by the cultural revolution, Yitzhak Rabin, Pompeii or the time I got dumped by a really really hot girl? I mean, she was seriously hot.

I still think that the "2001 - 9/11 WTC" is wrong. It should say "2001 - Terrorist attacks on US" or something instead since it wasn't just the World Trade Center, but the Pentagon that was attacked, and another plane that was headed for the White House.

Moss you know I love your designs, and apart from the already mentioned gay pride issue, I think that some of these 'tragic world events' are very subjective. I mean, i think more chileans would have been affected by the events of 9/11/1973 than the chilean earthquake in 1960. Moreover a few Nicaraguans living in rural Nicaragua in 1983 might have a few things to say about leaving them 'of the map'. Or the Sudanese that were adversly affected by the bombing of the Al-Shifa Pharmaceutical Factory in Khartoum in 1998. I suppose what I'm trying to say is, that however noble the message is supposed to be, or passionate for that matter, it will never truely be a design appreciated or accepted by all, because one persons tragedy is sometimes anothers reason to celebrate.

you could also say that we are a member of the most hostile species this resilient little planet will ever see.

But... it would be go out of date as soon as the following years bring tragedies of their own.

Nice color coding though.

The silkscreened label on a Threadless shirt has the level of detail that this would require. Follow It is also a small-detail-oriented shirt that works fine. So, no technical obstacle. (People who actually work for Threadless are allowed to dispute that.)

This is like a Debbie Downer designed shirt.

You see it from afar and you're full of joy,

but when you get close and start noticing

all the tragedies listed you can almost hear

the Debbie Downer whaaa.. whuuu.. trumpet

sound.

I like the idea, but that is a lot to read, I don't think people would want to wear a reading rainbow.

hmm. kinda cool. but makes me think of gay pride too much. like, "yet, gay people survive". not that i hate gay people, just, how do they survive without us to breed 'em?
Rahna
Rahna on Sep 15 '05
No gay issues here. I don't get that vibe of fit at all, becuase of the missing stripes in the rainbow. Like it was said earlier, can't have a gay pride rainbow without the purple! ;)

Very, very amazing. I'm stunned by it.

One thing I noticed is that there's only two events between 1990 and 2001. I think the Oklahoma City bombing, the bombings in Bosnia, and the Columbine shootings are all important events that could go on it. The sad events at the Waco Branch Davidian compound would be a fitting addition.

Those are just my thoughts though.

it makes me sad that it's so much more dificult to quantify our greatest triumphs. No one can deny that these are horrible things, but if you tried to put out nice things, we'd all be arguing till the cows come home which is the most deserving. Some accomplishments I think are nice:

The Sandwich

The Bicycle

this just hit me: the ones in yellow are "man made" disasters, meaning they happened at the hands of people. the green ones are natural-ish disasters, the red ones are wars... but the blue ones... im not sure what to classify those as.

yes, i have come back to admire this design again. i am not ashamed!

rrich76 on Sep 19 '05
yet another reason to be annoyed at the gay appropriation of the rainbow (yes I know this isnt a "perfect" gay pride rainbow, and no, that won't matter a bit to the hundreds of people who would glance at it for 2 seconds and see it as one) this shirt idea rocks, but it WOULD have the majority of people who see it on you tagging you as gay

i still dont see the gay association, really. i guess many 13 year olds would see it and thing ''oh noes taht is teh GEHY!!!!1!!.!'', but really, if i see a rainbow, thats not what i think of. of course if the word 'pride' is written around it, then yes. but i dont think everyone is low enough to automatically think someone is gay and hate them for it because there is a rainbow in the design of their shirt.
